August 30, 20125 Steps to a More Positive Life
Positive psychology is getting more attention as a valid clinical approach to treating depression and anxiety. Traditional therapy has focused on dysfunction and problems in one’s life, but positive psychology is the study and application of happiness.
Positive psychology focuses on how ordinary people can become happier and more fulfilled.
Here are some ways to create more of the positive:
1. Be aware of your negative self-talk and practice laughing at your fears.
2. Be grateful for meaningful moments in your life and revisit these thoughts often. Spend time remembering the details- remember colors, lighting, shapes, feelings and smells.
3. Focus on what you have, not on what you do not have. Practice having a “beautiful day” with the only intention of filling the day with meaningful moments. Try to do this one day a week. If that’s too difficult at this point, just start with two hours. Give thought to what’s meaningful to you, not what you think should be meaningful.
4. Be inspired by others instead of comparing yourself to them. Spend more time thinking about role models and why you admire certain traits.
5. Surround yourself with positive people. Positive people are individuals who don’t focus on a tiny portion of life that they dislike. They keep life in perspective and you feel energized when you spend time with them.
